Hank's second solo tour was marked by a much more elaborate stage set incorporating huge silhouettes of the man himself. This year it was much more clearly "Hank's show" and not "The Shadows without Bruce". He was playing as well as ever and seemed more relaxed as the "star" than he had been the previous year. The band, too, were exemplary. Warren and Mark were as good as ever. Ben showing how much he had gained both in technique and confidence from the experience of the previous tour whilst Pete May proved to be an able replacement for Brian Bennett, the only change from last year's line-up. Fortunately, the Birmingham concert was recorded and deemed suitable for commercial release. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! |

TV appearances
On 20th November, Hank made a guest appearance during Cliff's spot on the 'Royal
Variety Performance at the London Palladium. They performed 'Move It'.
Hank made his usual appearance at BBC's 'Pebble Mill', on Monday 4th December. Backed by his tour band. Between performing (miming?) 'The Young Ones' and 'Living Doll' from the 'Hank plays Cliff' album he was interviewed by Alan Titchmarsh who also presented Hank with his customary 'Gold Disc'.
As last year, Hank again joined in the Cliff Richard Celebrity Tennis at the NIA on 16th December. After the tennis, Cliff and Hank performed acoustic arrangements of 'The Young Ones' , 'Living Doll', 'Move It' and Travellin' Light'. Michael Ball joined them for 'Dream' and Cliff did 'All Shook Up' and 'Summer Holiday'. The Event was once again recorded by Sky TV and broadcast on the Sky Sports Channel on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. All songs except 'Summer Holiday' were shown in the TV programme.
The Diamond Awards
In between the Newcastle (7 December) and Glasgow (10 December) concerts, Hank,
Warren, Ben, Mark and Pete interrupted their tour to travel to Belgium, taking part in
the Diamond Awards Festival at Antwerp on December 9th. Hank shared the bill with
Tommy Roe and Sir Cliff Richard.
Hank's set was a shortened (approx 1 hour) version of his tour act. Comprising mostly of Shadows numbers, there were no numbers from "Hank Plays Cliff" and in fact only one track ("Heartbeat") from his recent albums was included.
Numbers played: Heartbeat, The Savage, Wonderful Land, The Rise And Fall of Flingel Blunt, Eleanor Rigby, Guitar Tango, Foot Tapper, Atlantis, Lucille/Rip It Up/Blue Suede Shoes (vocal), Sleepwalk, Shadoogie, Apache. Hank also joined Cliff's act to perform the updated version of "Move It"
The concert was recorded by Belgian TV but as far as I know, only Cliff's set has been transmitted. I have heard a recording of a Belgian Radio broadcast which included an interview with Hank together with the Heartbeat, The Savage, Eleanor Rigby, Guitar Tango and Apache.
