SIXTIES CONVENTION |
|
Report and photos by Christophe Chen All began with the morning sunrise showing me
the long road to the City of Tours in the mid-west of France. Arriving on Saturday at
10:00am I could see the first rush of visitors parking their cars front of the Park of
Expo and was astonished by the immensity of the Park which also bore a garden Theme Park
for children, numerous and various trading workshops and stores, which actually created a
big open trade fair in this hearty French countryside. About 10 000 people went to this
'Sixties Expo'.
The main interest for me was the home of the fan-clubs under a big white top where our Shads fan-club and Burns Guitars got their own workshop. Bernard, his spouse Hélène and friends have been there since Friday, and then came Brian 'Licorice' Locking and Alan Jones accompanied by Barry Gibson and singer Keith West. What a heartful welcome we gave to each other, remembering this'n that which created some loud acclaims in this Shadows place! Really a pleasure to meet them again under a very hot weather (28 °C, more like Southern Italy than mid-west France!) and a merciless sun which added more spice to the event. Could it be for that reason when people were all looking for Shadows under such sunny skies?
Another big top dressed in black was the 'Golf Drouot' concert hall, name of the famous Parisian Home of Star in the Sixties, the equivalent of the 2I's of London, where the gig takes place, and could meet the French Shads style band 'Guitar Express' making the sound check. Despite of the meterological change, it was not possible to
do the gigs in open air, so that many people was suffering from the oppressive heat
indoors. However, the passion for the Shadows music brought some fresh sources to an
informed audience. At 3:30pm, another French guitars band 'Atlantis Five' went on stage for some 'dance with the Shadows' numbers that really made people start dancing front of the stage. M. LONGONI is the lead guitarist and played some of his self-penned numbers too.

| 4:30pm was the top gig of the day as announced thru' loud speakers around the park of Expo, with the welcoming of The LOCAL HEROES, this time without Cliff Hall , Clem Cattini and Phil kelly. They were replaced by Guitar Express unique drummer Alain JOCOUX (who did it all like Big Brian B') and Alain BERTRAND on rhythm + acoustic guitar. | ||

Using Burns Guitars, they played most of our
favourite hits like Shadoogie, Shazam, See you in my Drums, Wonderful Land, The Frightened
City, Kon-Tiki, Flingel Bunt..... Brian 'Licorice' went on stage to huge applause as he is actually the unique Shadows Legend of the band. He played bass on Guitar Tango, Dance On, Foot Tapper, Nivram, and the French audience were to discover his undoubted talent on harmonica when playing 'Argentina', 'Atlantis' and 'Dakota' ! |
|
| Well, Brian is
definitely the heart of the band, giving some deeper emotion and feelings thru' his breath that really matched the roots of this medieval France. Then, the Shadows music was quite even better captured and enjoyed by the novice audience ! Some got their feets dancing On !

Singer Keith West
appeared then on stage for some good old rock'n roll songs such as 'Summertime Blues',
'Com'on everybody', 'Peggy Sue', 'It'll be me', 'Move it' etc... The gig ended by some 'encores' with Apache and FBI. |

| After such a warm day gigs, the right solution
is to dive into the nearest pool you could find next door, or to take a cold shower, so that without transition or helping Bernard to tidy the store up, we went to the famous unknown hotel 15 km from Tours in the deep countryside in a field called 'Savonières'. The hotel 'LES CEDRES' is a two detached old style buildings with a swimming pool for relaxing, surrounded by woods and greens (and squirrels)...Here was to be the special night show with a limited audience of 100 people at the very delightful Hotel restaurant. Could neighbourhoods hear the loud sound check, or fear already the overnight guitars and drums sounds coming thru the open windows till the country woods ? Well, that hotel gig would certainly make history in all the country area of Tours! After dinning round an hearty table and some good French red wines, GUITAR EXPRESS started the show smoothly this time with some old Shads numbers rarely heard on stage as Patrice BASTIEN announced.
Well, it was quite a dancing night show too, so 'Blue Star'
slow number introduced the night event. Then, came 'My resistance is low', '36-24-36',
'Midnight', and Brian 'Licorice' to take the bass in 'Perfidia' and a medley of 'Foot
Tapper/Dance on' and various numbers such as 'Big Boy', 'The Rumble', 'Ranka Chank', 'The
Fly & the Spy', 'Gonzales', 'Sleepwalk', 'Tales of Raggy Tramline', a special 'Apache'
and many more...Approaching midnight, the show was radically changed to a kind of Arty's
Party when each guitarists played with whom he would like to play with. And I must admit
that it's in such moment that things sounded more interesting for our pleasure.
What should I say more than 'Nivram' was played with 2 bassists Alan and Brian, 'Midnight' played again with 2 leads Barry on Burns and Patrice on Fender... Well, some unique spots never lived before and caught up only during that heartful and jazzy night! Should I say it was actually a 'night in Tunisia'? Yip, this should be the right title. The show lasted until around 4:30am under Champagne
and morning cocktail. After a brief sleeping night, breakfast at 10:30am was quite
delightful as around the table were Brian, Barry, Alan, Keith, Patrice, Alain, Daniel and
spouses....Well quite better than a chat room, as some remembering stories during the
Shads old days, and guitars techniques. Suggestions are always appreciated. But, we were
now on Sunday, so things went on cooler and less tense.
The end of the Expo was around the workshop for
all kind of dedications and autographs from our Heroes to the joy of many fans. |
